| Why are There so few Women in Computer Science? |
|
Although people have been aware for quite some time about the large gender discrepancies in fields having to do with math and science, few realize the extent to which this presents itself in computer science specifically. Though the percentage of women in fields such as mathematics and medicine is rising, this is not the case in computer science. The technology business has made incredible advances in recent years, but drawing more women into the field is not among them. In fact, the opposite is true: our society is drawing fewer and fewer women into computing worldwide. Most of the member states of the European Union average about twenty percent women working with information technology, and yet the percentage is falling. In Canada the number of women studying computer science has dropped from twenty-eight to twenty-four percent in the past five years. In the USA, for women, the percentage of bachelor’s degrees awarded in computer science has decreased almost every year in the last decade. My research explored this issue, and my paper outlines possible reasons and solutions for the lack of women in Computer Science.
